LESSON 3 · Rebels of Modern Art
Pop Art's Commercial Triumph
Pop Art achieved what no previous movement had — it became genuinely popular with mass audiences while keeping critical respect. Warhol's Marilyn prints, Lichtenstein's comic paintings, and Hockney's swimming pools are loved by millions who have no interest in art theory.
That success created the paradox that now defines contemporary art: a movement built to question the boundary between art and commerce became the most commercially successful art ever made. The critique of consumer culture had turned into a premium consumer product.
