LESSON 1 · From Excess to Order: Rococo & Neoclassicism
Intimacy Over Grandeur
Rococo deliberately rejected Baroque monumentality in favor of intimate, personal spaces. Where Baroque rooms overwhelmed with scale and drama, Rococo interiors charmed with delicacy — smaller rooms, softer colors, lighter furniture, and decorations that invited close inspection rather than awestruck distance.
This shift reflected changing social patterns. The French aristocracy moved their real social lives from vast state rooms to small private apartments where conversation, flirtation, and intellectual exchange replaced formal ceremony. Art followed architecture into these intimate spaces, becoming smaller, lighter, and more playful.
