With fasting and prayer — and they left the work unsigned
In the Orthodox tradition an icon is "written," not invented. Iconographers traditionally fasted, prayed, and worked in silence, treating the task as worship rather than self-expression, and they did not sign their work. The goal was to faithfully pass on a sacred prototype, which is why icons painted centuries apart look so strikingly alike.
