LESSON 1 · Sacred Art Across Cultures
Windows to the Sacred
The tradition treats every brushstroke as a form of prayer. Iconographers fast and pray before they begin, working not to limit themselves but to set the ego aside. The aim isn't self-expression — it's the faithful transmission of sacred images believed to connect the viewer directly with the divine.
Russian icon painting reached its peak with Andrei Rublev, whose Trinity (c. 1410) shows three angels seated around a table. The composition has an extraordinary geometric serenity, and its quiet circular harmony has made it the most admired icon in Russian art.
