Icons use reverse perspective, with lines spreading outward
In ordinary paintings, parallel lines shrink toward a vanishing point in the distance. Icons often do the opposite — lines spread **outward** toward the viewer, a device called **reverse perspective**. The effect places the vanishing point in front of the image, as if the holy scene were opening out into the viewer's space rather than receding away.
