LESSON 1 · Sacred Art Across Cultures

Theology in Pigment

Icon painting is one of the oldest continuously practiced art forms in Christianity, and a few principles run through all of it:

  • Dark-to-light layering mirrors the passage from shadow to divine light
  • Flat composition and gold backgrounds place holy figures in eternity, not earthly space
  • Canonical rules keep images consistent across centuries — faithfulness, not innovation, is the goal

Icon painting challenges every modern assumption about art. There's no personal style, and the iconographer's ego is meant to disappear. What's left is pure theology — and for believers, that's exactly the point.
