Newspeak and Control

The Party's most insidious weapon is Newspeak, a stripped-down version of English designed to make rebellious thought literally impossible. If no word exists for freedom, no one can conceive of it. This anticipated real debates about how language shapes cognition — a question still studied in linguistics as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis.

Doublethink requires citizens to accept two contradictory beliefs at the same time. War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. Orwell understood that authoritarian power depends not just on force but on the corruption of logic itself — leaving people unable to trust their own minds.
