LESSON 6 · Books That Shaped the World

A Day in June

Published in 1925, Mrs Dalloway unfolds across a single day in June 1923, as Clarissa Dalloway prepares to host an evening party. Virginia Woolf uses stream of consciousness to slip in and out of her characters' minds while they cross paths on London streets, sharing the same city yet locked inside private worlds.

Throughout the day, Big Ben strikes the hour over the whole city. Its chimes bind everyone to the same public clock, yet each person lives in a separate stream of thought. A single struck hour can hold a flood of memory. The clock counts minutes; the mind holds a lifetime in one passing moment.
