Clarissa and Septimus

Clarissa Dalloway is a polished upper-class hostess who keeps her deepest feelings hidden behind perfect manners. Septimus Warren Smith is a shell-shocked WWI veteran drowning in trauma the world refuses to see. The two never meet, yet Woolf braids their days together so each reflects the other.

Clarissa plays the gracious host while privately guarding memories of her youthful love for Sally Seton. Septimus is haunted by post-traumatic stress that his doctors brush off as weakness. Both are pressed by the same demand: keep the surface smooth and never let the inner truth show.
