A clerical mix-up swapped the hunter's name onto the tiger
In the novel the cub was meant to be called Thirsty, for how desperately it drank when it was caught, while the hunter who captured it was named Richard Parker. A paperwork error swapped the two, so the tiger was logged with the hunter's very human name. The reversal quietly hints that the boy and the beast may be two faces of the same survivor.
