Algernon the Mouse

The lab mouse Algernon is Charlie's parallel and harbinger. Both undergo the same procedure, both reach dramatic cognitive heights, and Charlie feels a deep kinship with the only other creature who shares his experience.

When Algernon turns aggressive, confused, and finally dies, Charlie watches his own future play out in miniature. Yet he keeps documenting his decline with scientific honesty, leaving behind data that might help future subjects even as his mind unravels.
