LESSON 5 · Overhyped or Underrated?
The Ethics Question
The scientists who perform the procedure — Dr. Strauss and Professor Nemur — treat Charlie as a research subject rather than a person. They show him off at conferences, discuss his case in the third person while he sits between them, and argue over publication credit while he understands every word. Keyes raises questions about informed consent and human experimentation that remain urgent today: Charlie signed forms he could not fully grasp, and the scientists' hunger for recognition outweighs their care for his wellbeing.
