LESSON 1 · Sci-Fi That Saw the Future

Soma and Modern Life

Soma is the World State's master tool, and citizens take "soma holidays" to escape any uncomfortable feeling. It captures Huxley's core insight: the most effective control makes people want to be controlled.

The modern parallels are striking. Antidepressants manage mood, social feeds deliver dopamine, streaming offers endless distraction. None are evil on their own, but their combined effect raises Huxley's question — if we engineer away all suffering, do we also lose what makes life meaningful?
