Beyond All Words
The Dao De Jing opens with one of philosophy's most famous paradoxes: "The Dao that can be spoken is not the eternal Dao." In other words, the moment you try to define the ultimate nature of reality, you have already missed it. Laozi, the legendary author, was not being difficult — he was making a point about the limits of language.

Dao literally means "the way" or "the path." It points to the natural order underlying everything — the rhythm that makes rivers flow downhill, seasons change, and seeds become trees without anyone giving instructions.
