LESSON 4 · Live With Intention
Paradox as Teaching
Daoism uses paradox on purpose. "The softest thing in the world overcomes the hardest." "Yield and overcome; bend and be straight." These contradictions are not failures of logic but tools for breaking habitual thinking.
Rational analysis works by splitting reality into categories: good or bad, true or false, self or other. Daoism argues that reality is more unified than those labels suggest. By presenting paradoxes that resist categorization, the text pushes you past analysis toward a more direct sense of wholeness. A mind comfortable with paradox is more adaptable than one that demands consistency.
