Postmodernism and Identity

Postmodernism challenged the idea that identity is fixed and essential. Your gender, race, and nationality are not natural categories but social constructions that could have been organized differently. This does not mean they are unreal — they have real effects on real people — but it does mean they are not inevitable.

This insight fueled liberation movements by showing that hierarchies based on identity categories are human creations, not natural laws. If racial categories were invented, racial hierarchies can be dismantled. If gender roles were constructed, they can be reconstructed.
