LESSON 2 · The Quest for Meaning

The Okinawan Secret

Okinawa has long been reported to have one of the highest concentrations of centenarians on Earth (a claim some demographers now question over patchy old records), and researchers there found that ikigai plays a real role in longevity. People with a clearly articulated reason for living tend to show lower rates of heart disease and depression.

The Okinawan approach differs from Western goal-setting in one crucial way: it does not require achievement or recognition. An elderly woman whose ikigai is tending her garden is seen as just as fulfilled as a celebrated artist. Purpose is measured by engagement, not by external validation.
