LESSON 2 · The Quest for Meaning
Small Joys Count
Western culture tends to demand that purpose be dramatic — change the world, build an empire, leave a legacy. Japanese ikigai is often quieter. Surveys in Japan have found that most people do not point to their job as their main source of purpose at all.

Most point to relationships, hobbies, and small daily pleasures. Your ikigai can be your morning tea ritual, your weekend woodworking, or the way you make your partner laugh. Purpose does not require grandeur. Sometimes it just requires paying attention to what already lights you up.
