Ikigai Across Cultures

Every culture has a version of ikigai, though the emphasis differs. The French speak of raison d'être. The Danish idea of hygge finds joy in simple comforts, and the German word Berufung describes a professional calling.

What makes ikigai distinctive is its comfort with the ordinary. Western purpose stories tend toward the heroic — change the world, leave a legacy, disrupt an industry. A fisherman who loves the morning sea has ikigai. A grandmother who lives for her grandchildren's visits has ikigai. This is purpose for everyone, not just the exceptional.
