LESSON 3 · The Quest for Meaning

The Nonessentialist Trap

The nonessentialist tries to fit everything in. They say yes to every request, chase every opportunity, and pack every moment with activity. The result is not productivity but a diffuse, exhausting sprawl where nothing gets full attention.

The nonessentialist believes everything is important. The essentialist knows almost nothing is. Saying no to a good opportunity feels wasteful — until you realize that pursuing everything guarantees mediocrity.
