LESSON 6 · What Makes Us Happy?

Eternal Recurrence Test

Nietzsche proposed the eternal recurrence as the ultimate test of a life well-lived. Suppose you were told you will live your exact life — every joy, every pain, every boring Tuesday — infinitely, in exact repetition. Would you welcome this, or scream in horror?

The thought experiment is not about cosmology. It is a diagnostic tool for your relationship to your own existence. If the idea fills you with dread, something about how you are living needs to change. The gap between your current life and one you would gladly repeat forever shows you exactly what to fix.
