LESSON 7 · What Makes Us Happy?
Breaking the Treadmill
Complete escape from hedonic adaptation is impossible — it is hardwired into human neurology. But partial escape is achievable through deliberate strategies. Savoring — consciously extending and appreciating positive experiences — slows the adaptation process by keeping attention on what you have rather than what you want next.
Novelty injection also helps. Couples who regularly try new activities together report higher satisfaction than those in comfortable routines. The brain adapts to sameness but stays engaged with variation. Variety is not the spice of life — it is the adaptation antidote.
