Patients with severe amnesia can keep personality traits while losing autobiographical memory; some brain injuries change personality while leaving memory intact. These splits suggest that identity has multiple parts that can be altered independently. The unified self you experience is itself a construction — a story the brain tells to make a collection of subsystems feel like one person.
