Where Complementarity Actually Helps

The opposite-attract idea is not entirely baseless. Research shows that complementary roles can work — a dominant person paired with a more accommodating one, or someone who loves planning with someone who loves executing. The key distinction is between values and roles.

Similar values plus complementary skills is the combination that research supports most strongly. Two people who both value adventure can benefit from one being better at logistics while the other generates ideas. Shared direction with different strengths is not the same as opposites attracting.
