It was uncommon and carried little baggage
In classical Greek, agape was a relatively plain, low-frequency word compared with eros and philia. That made it useful: New Testament writers could pour a new meaning into it — God's freely given, unearned love — without the romantic or friendly associations the more popular words already carried.
