LESSON 5 · Philosophy of Love
Boundaries and Unconditional Love
The most common objection to agape is practical: does unconditional love mean accepting abuse? Across the traditions that teach it, the answer is no. You can love unconditionally while setting firm boundaries.
A parent who loves unconditionally still disciplines their child. A friend who practices agape still confronts harmful behavior. The love stays constant while the response to the behavior changes. Unconditional love is not unconditional tolerance — it commits to seeing the humanity in someone no matter how they act, while still refusing to accept behavior that causes harm.
