Li: the Power of Ritual
Li (ritual propriety) is one of the most misunderstood Confucian concepts. It does not mean empty ceremony. Li refers to the patterns of respectful behavior that hold society together — from greeting elders properly to conducting government with dignity.

Confucius observed that when people follow appropriate rituals, they internalize the values those rituals express. Bowing to an elder is not just a gesture — it trains you to feel respect. Sharing a meal with proper etiquette trains generosity and patience.
