LESSON 3 · Wisdom of the East

Junzi: the Exemplary Person

Confucius did not aim to create rule-followers. His ideal was the junzi — often translated as "gentleman" but better understood as "exemplary person." The junzi is someone whose character has been so thoroughly cultivated that they naturally do the right thing.

The junzi contrasts with the xiaoren (small person) who acts from self-interest. The junzi considers what is right; the xiaoren considers what is profitable. The junzi is moved by duty; the xiaoren by personal gain. This is not about social class but about moral development. Consistency matters more than intensity.
