The Voiceover Confession

Noir's famous first-person narration is a tell. The hero is recounting events from a place of defeat — speaking to us after the wreck, not before it.

That changes how you watch. You are not wondering whether this person will fall. You already know they did. You are listening to them explain exactly how.

Knowing the ending before the beginning quietly flips the genre. A mystery asks what happens next. Noir already told you the answer, so it asks something darker instead: why was the fall unavoidable?

You stop watching for the twist and start watching for the cause — which turns a crime story into a tragedy.
