LESSON 1 · The Craft of Screen Storytelling
Subplots as Mirrors
Subplots are not distractions — they are thematic mirrors. In The Shawshank Redemption, Brooks's subplot mirrors Andy's: both are institutionalized men facing freedom. Brooks fails where Andy succeeds, and that contrast deepens the theme without a line of exposition.
The best subplots comment on the main plot through contrast or parallel. A romance inside an action film works when its stakes mirror the physical stakes — disconnected, the subplot just feels like padding. Weave them tightly enough and removing one would collapse the others: that is architecture, not decoration.
