Why Structure Matters

Beginning writers often resist structure, believing it limits creativity. The opposite is true. Structure provides a framework within which surprises become meaningful — a twist only works because the audience has unconscious expectations that the twist violates.

Consider music: jazz improvisation sounds free but operates within chord progressions and rhythm. Film structure works the same way. The three-act framework is not a prison — it is a shared language between filmmaker and audience. Learn it, and you start to see the invisible architecture beneath every story.
