Characters That Haunt
Some characters outlive their films. Hannibal Lecter, the Joker, and Forrest Gump entered the cultural vocabulary because they embody ideas larger than their stories. People reference them without ever seeing the original films.
Characters reach this permanence when they crystallize something the culture needs to process. Travis Bickle gave a face to urban alienation; the Terminator gave a face to technological anxiety. They did not just entertain — they became a shared reference point a whole society could point to.
