LESSON 1 · Movie Magic: Behind the Camera

Camera Movement as Emotion

A static camera creates contemplation. A tracking shot creates momentum. A handheld shot creates intimacy or chaos. Great cinematographers choose movement as deliberately as composers choose instruments.

The Steadicam, invented in 1975, added a new register: gliding movement that feels like floating consciousness. The Shining's Steadicam shots through hotel corridors create dread because the movement is too smooth for human perception — it feels inhuman.
