Reading Cinematography

Once you understand basic cinematography principles, you begin seeing choices instead of images. Why is this shot dark? Because darkness creates mystery or threat. Why is the camera low? Because the character needs to seem powerful. Why is the focus shallow? Because one detail matters more than the environment.

The best cinematography serves the story so naturally that audiences never notice the technique. You feel tension, beauty, or sadness without recognizing that light placement caused the feeling. When the camerawork calls attention to itself, it risks pulling you out of the story.
