A stock scream reused in hundreds of films
The **Wilhelm scream** is a single recorded yell from the 1951 film Distant Drums. Sound designer Ben Burtt rediscovered it, named it after a character shot in a 1953 Western, and slipped it into Star Wars. It has since been dropped into **hundreds of films** as an inside joke among sound editors.
