LESSON 4 · Movie Magic: Behind the Camera

The Performance Capture Frontier

Andy Serkis transformed VFX acting through performance capture. His Gollum, Caesar, and Kong proved that digital characters could deliver emotionally complex performances indistinguishable from traditional acting.

The technology records an actor's facial expressions and body movements, then maps them onto a digital character, preserving the micro-expressions that carry emotion — the slight eyebrow raise, the jaw tension, the moisture in an eye.

It raises a real question: if a digital character makes you cry, who deserves the credit — the actor or the artists who turned the performance into pixels?
