VFX and the Future

Real-time rendering, machine learning, and virtual production — LED wall stages like The Volume in The Mandalorian — are collapsing the boundary between production and post-production. Effects that once took months of rendering now appear in-camera during filming.

This raises a creative question. When anything is possible, what constrains the choices? Practical limits once forced innovation — the broken shark in Jaws, the budget that gave Alien its claustrophobia. Without them, directors must find internal discipline to replace external limits.

The future of VFX is not more spectacle but better integration: imagery so seamless that the audience stops asking "is this real?"
