LESSON 5 · Cinema Around the World
Samurai Cinema's Influence
Kurosawa's samurai films were so cinematic that Hollywood remade them outright — and the borrowing reshaped whole genres, not just single movies. His action choreography used weather, terrain, and physical exhaustion as dramatic elements, influencing nearly every action filmmaker who followed. The rain-soaked final battle of Seven Samurai set a template for climactic combat that directors still echo today. The cultural exchange flows both ways: Kurosawa himself adapted Shakespeare and American crime novels.
