Marlon Brando was forty-seven when he played the aging Vito Corleone, using cotton wads in his cheeks, darkened hair, and a mumbling delivery that turned quiet speech into magnetic authority. He often avoided memorizing lines, which forced the other actors to listen closely and gave every scene a natural tension.
