Paramount did not want Al Pacino. The studio saw him as too short, too unknown, and too quiet for Michael, and pushed for bigger names. Coppola fought for him because that very stillness was the point: Michael had to read as the calm, decent son before the cold killer.

The gamble defined Pacino's career. His Michael barely raises his voice, yet you watch the warmth drain out of him scene by scene — a performance built on what he holds back rather than what he shows.
