LESSON 1 · The Science of Sound & Song
Rhythm Across Cultures
West African drumming uses interlocking polyrhythms where three or more patterns overlap — the djembe, dunun, and bell each play different cycles that mesh into a complex whole. This tradition traveled through slavery to the Americas and became the rhythmic foundation of jazz, blues, rock, and hip-hop.

Indian classical music uses a system called tala — rhythmic cycles of 7, 8, 10, 12, or 16 beats that the tabla player navigates with improvisational freedom. Flamenco uses 12-beat compas patterns with accents on unexpected beats.
