Why Rhythm Matters
Rhythm is more than a musical concept — it shapes how we experience time:
- Groove — the quality that makes you want to move, the sweet spot between predictability and surprise
- Entrainment — the tendency for biological systems to sync with external rhythms; your heart, brainwaves, and motor neurons all entrain to music
- The pocket — a musician's term for playing so precisely within the beat that the rhythm feels effortless and locked in
- Rhythmic complexity — this varies by culture; West African polyrhythms are among the most intricate, while minimalist techno uses simplicity as a tool
- Silence is rhythmic — the spaces between notes matter as much as the notes themselves
