LESSON 1 · Music Through the Ages
The Language All Music Speaks
When you hear a pop song resolve from tension to relief, you are hearing principles codified during the Classical period (1750-1820). Composers like Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven did not just write great music — they established the harmonic, structural, and emotional grammar that Western music still follows.

Before the Classical period, Baroque music (Bach, Handel, Vivaldi) emphasized ornamentation and counterpoint — multiple independent melodies woven together. The Classical era stripped this down, prioritizing clarity, balance, and emotional directness.
