LESSON 1 · Music Through the Ages
Classical composers formalized structures still used today:
- Sonata form — exposition (introduce themes), development (transform them), recapitulation (return home). This tension-and-release arc shows up in pop songs, film scores, and jazz
- The symphony — a multi-movement work for orchestra, usually four movements with contrasting tempos and moods
- The concerto — a showdown between soloist and orchestra, balancing individual expression with collective power
These forms are not arbitrary rules. They are blueprints for building satisfying emotional journeys. A pop verse-chorus structure is a simplified sonata form: introduce an idea, create contrast, return.
