LESSON 4 · Music Through the Ages

How Flow Evolved

Rap's rhythmic delivery — its flow — has changed dramatically over the decades:

  • Old school (1970s–80s) — simple, on-beat delivery with end rhymes. Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC
  • Golden age (late 1980s–90s) — Rakim rhymed mid-line and varied his rhythm; Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, and Tupac pushed lyrical complexity
  • Double time (2000s) — Eminem and Twista rapped at machine-gun speed while staying clear
  • Mumble rap (2010s) — Future and Young Thug used voice as an instrument over lyrics
  • Polyrhythmic flow (current) — Kendrick Lamar and JID layer multiple rhythms in one verse
