The Four Pillars
Hip-hop is not just rap. It was originally defined by four elements: MCing (rapping), DJing (turntablism), B-boying (breakdancing), and graffiti art. Together they formed a complete culture, not just a music genre.

Sampling became hip-hop's signature production technique — taking fragments of existing recordings and rebuilding them into new compositions. The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique (1989) used over 100 samples from genres spanning funk to the Beatles.
