LESSON 5 · Art Beyond Europe

A Living Heritage

The art of ancient China never became a museum relic. Its forms still shape Chinese identity, and many of its greatest treasures left the country during the colonial era — most famously the works looted from the Old Summer Palace by British and French troops in 1860. Today those objects are among the most sought-after Chinese artifacts anywhere, and recovering them is treated as a matter of national pride and historical justice.
