LESSON 5 · Art Beyond Europe

Porcelain Perfection

China invented porcelain, a hard, translucent, glass-smooth ceramic that no other culture could make for centuries. Its finest expression came under the Song dynasty (960-1279): celadon with its soft jade-green glaze, and Ru ware, of which only a few dozen pieces survive today. Both prized a quiet, minimalist perfection — subtle color and flawless form over decoration.

The tradition of scholar-painting survived imperial collapse and political revolution. Even during the Cultural Revolution, when traditional art was attacked as bourgeois, the techniques and philosophical principles survived in exile and underground practice.
