The Camera's Challenge

The first reaction from the art establishment was denial. Academic painters waved photography off as a mechanical trick — a process with no taste, no judgment, no soul. A camera, they argued, only copies; it cannot choose, idealize, or feel.

They had a point, but they used it as a shield. While they listed painting's strengths — color, scale, grandeur — photography quietly got sharper, faster, and cheaper every year. The threat wasn't going away.
