LESSON 5 · Is Anybody Out There?

Self-Destruction Evidence

If the Great Filter lies ahead, the leading candidate is self-destruction through technology. Humanity has held nuclear weapons capable of ruining the planet for only about eighty years — a blink in cosmic time — and we keep adding new powers like artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, each carrying existential risk.

The argument is statistical. If thousands of civilizations reached our level of technology and none spread across the galaxy, perhaps they all destroyed themselves soon after. Climate collapse, engineered pandemics, or unaligned AI could each be the filter that stops a species in its tracks.
